چکیده
Abstract We study distributional preferences in adolescent peer networks. Using incentivized choices between allocations for themselves and a passive agent, children are classified into efficiency-loving, inequality-loving, inequality-averse, spiteful types. find that pairs of students who report friendship link more likely to exhibit the same preference type than other attend school. The relation types is almost completely driven by inequality-loving role networks explaining goes beyond network composition effects. A low rank academic performance central position within relate positively higher likelihood being as spiteful. Hence, social hierarchies seem be correlated with

Distributional preferences and competitive behavior☆
We study experimentally the relationship between distributional preferences and competitive behavior. We find that spiteful subjects react strongest to competitive pressure and win in a tournament significantly more often than efficiency-minded and inequality averse subjects. However, when given the choice between a tournament and a piece rate scheme, efficiency-minded subjects choose the tourn...
متن کاملDistributional Preferences and Political Behavior∗
We decompose distributional preferences into fair-mindedness (weight on oneself vs. others) and equality-efficiency tradeoffs, and measure both at the individual level in a large and diverse sample of Americans. We find considerable heterogeneity in both the extent of fairmindedness and willingness to trade off equality and efficiency, much of which cannot be explained by standard socioeconomic...
متن کاملThe Distributional Preferences of Americans∗
This paper characterize the distributional preferences of a large and diverse sample of Americans. We decompose distributional preferences into two distinct components — fair-mindedness (tradeoffs between oneself and others) and equality-efficiency tradeoffs — by estimating constant elasticity of substitution utility functions at the individual level. We find considerable heterogeneity in both ...
متن کاملPeer effects in adolescent overweight.
This study is the first to estimate peer effects for adolescent weight. We use data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health) and define peer groups using nominated friends within schools. Endogenous peer groups are accounted for using a combination of school fixed effects, instrumental variables, and alternative definitions of peers (i.e., grade-level peers). Mean ...
متن کاملThe distributional preferences of an elite.
We studied the distributional preferences of an elite cadre of Yale Law School students, a group that will assume positions of power in U.S. society. Our experimental design allows us to test whether redistributive decisions are consistent with utility maximization and to decompose underlying preferences into two qualitatively different tradeoffs: fair-mindedness versus self-interest, and equal...
